The Name

Nobody knows where "Vero" came from. There are theories, but no consensus. The town was chartered on 10 June 1919 with 71 residents. It became Vero Beach on 19 May 1925, when it was made the seat of the newly formed Indian River County. The Indian River name is a fruit brand as much as a place—citrus built this area, though citrus greening disease has hurt the industry badly in recent years.

You do not need any of that to enjoy the trip. But it helps to know you are standing in a place that was once the center of the baseball world, and now it is just a good beach town with a garden and a playground and a few restaurants that will not ruin your evening.
